The pandemic nearly killed Cirque du Soleil. A live-entertainment company that couldn't do live entertainment. Bankruptcy. Restructuring. Uncertainty.
The old frame
Before COVID, Cirque was "the best circus." That frame was already limiting. After COVID, it was a liability. Live-only meant fragile.
The new frame
We landed on two words: Artistic Entertainment.
Not circus. Not theater. Not live events. A category that could hold live shows, digital experiences, immersive installations, and whatever came next.
- Live touring? Yes, that's artistic entertainment
- A Vegas residency? Also artistic entertainment
- A streaming experience? Still artistic entertainment
- A theme park collaboration? You get the idea
The lesson
Cirque didn't need a comeback strategy. They needed a category big enough to contain their ambition.
The micro-monopoly gave them permission to become what they were always becoming.
