AI can map a competitive landscape in minutes. Every player, their positioning, the white space, the overlaps. It's remarkable.
And it's not enough.
What AI does well
Category structure mapping. Feed an AI system the competitive landscape, consumer perceptions, and brand attributes, and it produces a clean map of who owns what.
- Clusters of competitors
- Unoccupied spaces
- Attribute overlaps
- Perceptual gaps no human would spot in a week
What AI can't do
Tell you where to play. The map shows the terrain. It doesn't choose the destination.
That choice requires:
- Understanding of the company's capabilities and constraints
- Judgment about timing and cultural readiness
- Conviction about which space is ownable, not just open
The division of labor
AI builds the map. The strategist picks the lot.
That's the job. And it's the part that doesn't automate.
