Positioning and micro-monopoly are not the same thing. Most strategists treat them like they are. That's the mistake.
Positioning
Positioning is where you sit relative to competitors. It's a map. You pick a spot. You're still on someone else's map.
Micro-monopoly
Micro-monopoly is owning the shelf. You define the category. You set the rules. Competitors have to position themselves relative to you.
- Positioning says: "We're the premium option in this category"
- Micro-monopoly says: "We created this category. There is no comparison."
Why it matters
Positioning is defensive. You're reacting to a landscape that already exists.
Micro-monopoly is offensive. You're building the landscape.
The companies that last don't find a position. They build a monopoly so small and so clear that no one can take it.
