The post-labor economy

PhilosophyFebruary 7, 2026

Humanity has been running one play for 12,000 years. Build technology. Get more productive. Repeat. From the Fertile Crescent to Silicon Valley, one unified story.

That story is ending.

The arc

The agricultural revolution started it. Every invention since has been a variation on the same theme: make humans more productive.

Steam engines. Assembly lines. Computers. The internet. Same ends. Same means. Different tools.

The endgame

AI isn't another tool in the sequence. It's the last one. A machine that can do the work itself.

  • Every previous technology made humans more productive
  • AI makes humans replaceable

That's not a shift in degree. It's a shift in kind. The story of humans advancing through technology concludes when the technology doesn't need us.

What comes next

The Purpose Era. No more laboring for productivity. Just laboring for purpose.

Not "what can we produce?" but "what do we understand?" Humans searching within and throughout the universe for truth. New ends. New means.

The most radical shift in human existence since 10,000 BC.
